Hermantown Volleyball

Hermantown defeated host Rock Ridge in straight sets Tuesday, earning a 26-24, 25-18, 25-20 victory in volleyball.

Setter Anna Bergerson fueled the Hawks’ offense with 20 assists and added two ace serves. Lilah Conley led Hermantown with eight kills and Sophie Schulz with seven.

Conley finishing with 27 digs, and Reese Lukovsky had 21.

Hermantown rode three singles victories and a pair of doubles wins to defeat Duluth Marshall 5-2 in girls tennis.

The Hawks took control in the middle and lower singles slots. Nevie Homich picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lyvia Kamunen at No. 2 singles, while McKenna Dorn blanked Amanda Winkels 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Amelia Linde added a tight victory at No. 4, edging Clara Johnson 6-2, 7-6.

Duluth Marshall struck first when standout Saanvi Naveen topped Evie Sullivan 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. The Hilltoppers’ other point came in doubles, where Elle Kovich and Silvie Lane combined to defeat Hermantown’s Rylee Kalkbrenner and Cadence Godmare 6-4, 6-1 at the top spot.

Hermantown swept the remaining doubles matches. At No. 2, Rylie Giesen and Abby Grzbowski breezed past Mabel Goodman and Ella Hadiaris 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3, Merrilee Manion and Lillian Clemons posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sophia Wallendorf and Ava Vee.

Hermantown collected wins in four of six matches and swept doubles play to defeat Duluth Denfeld 5-2 in girls tennis.

At No. 2 singles, Hermantown’s Nevie Homich battled to a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Olivia Pipho. Abby Grzbowski added another point for the Hawks at No. 4 with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Samantha Rick.

Denfeld earned its two victories at the top of the lineup. Anissa MacMillan opened the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hermantown’s Evie Sullivan at No. 1 singles, while Vanessa Pascone outlasted McKenna Dorn 7-6 (5), 4-6, 10-7 at No. 3.

Hermantown controlled doubles play, dropping only 10 total games across three matches. Rylee Kalkbrenner and Cadence Godmare teamed up at No. 1 to post a 6-4, 6-1 win. Jillian Ritsche and Chloe Gustafson followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 2, and the Hawks’ No. 3 tandem of Rylie Giesen and Merrilee Manion closed out the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 result.

Hermantown earned a pair of doubles victories but couldn’t overcome Hibbing’s sweep in singles in a 5-2 road loss in girls tennis.

The Hawks succeeded at the bottom of the lineup, where Chloe Gustafson and Jillian Ritsche delivered a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lilyana Sparks and Lauren Ringhofer at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Hermantown’s Lillian Clemons and Merrilee Manion battled through a tiebreaker in the second set to edge Hanley Ortiz and Vivian Claughety 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Hermantown dropped all four singles matches despite several competitive efforts. Evie Sullivan fell 6-0, 6-3 to Hibbing standout Kenedi Koland at No. 1 singles, while Nevie Homich lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. McKenna Dorn pushed Olivia Theien to a first-set tiebreak before falling 7-6 (5), 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and Rylie Giesen came up short 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.

Hibbing also claimed No. 1 doubles, where Kori McCormick and Bryjah Schnipkoweit downed Rylee Kalkbrenner and Cadence Godmare 7-5, 6-2.
